Mia's Labour Story

The morning of 5th December 2009, I woke up nervous. I was going to have a baby. At 16 years old. Although, I didn't think about my age really. I was mixed with emotions. All I knew was my baby was entering the world that day. My Dad phoned labour ward to see if there was room for me, as I got told the day before I needed to be induced due to having very high blood pressure, start of pre-eclampsia and still having Obstetric Cholestasis. They asked us to go up by 8.30 am.

When we arrived at my local hospital, I was lead to my room. Walking down the corridor hearing screaming and shouting of other mothers giving birth. I arrived at my room. Room number 5 on the left side, half way down the corridor. It was a pretty simple room, a bed, a chair, a radio on top of a bedside table with a jug of water too and then there was an empty little cot for the baby.

The midwife spoke to me first about getting induced and what they will do. My Dad stepped out of the room whilst the midwives broke my waters. It was a weird feeling. I could feel the little hook then a pulling feeling as they managed to break my waters. I was asked to walk around the hospital for about half an hour so I did. I stopped a few times as my waters were still breaking. My Dad went to the shop quickly so I sat on the chairs by the main doors. He also phoned baby's Dad to tell him I had been induced and asked if he was coming, baby's Dad said he had a Rugby game to attend too. So that was it. We didn't hear nothing else from him. I was upset but I had more important things to think about than him. I was having my first baby.

I arrived back to the room and nothing was happening so they asked me to go for another walk. So we did, again. I only managed to get half way down then had to turn back as my contractions were starting. A couple of hours after I had to have a drip because the contractions weren't strong enough.

Contractions started getting stronger and closer together. Just over half way through the midwife decided to give me diamorphine because she thought it would help ease the pain as I was struggling too much. I really can't remember much on what happened during labour if I am honest. But I remember telling the midwife I wanted a toilet so she brought out one of those chairs with a hole in it, not sure what they are called. I sat on it, and started to push. Silly me thought I wanted a toilet but instead I had the urge to push the baby out. She got me onto the bed. 29 minutes later, my baby was out.

My beautiful baby girl. She was put straight on me. She was a spitting image of her Dad. No words could explain how happy I was. Later on, my brother and grandparents arrived for a quick visit. They were over the moon. The smiles on all their faces, including my Dad's, were priceless.

My Dad was my rock all through my pregnancy, and all through my labour. He still is.

Mia Wyn was born 5th December 2009, 7.12pm, weighing 8lbs 9oz. She was just perfect.

I will soon write about my life as a single 17 year old mother soon. If you have not read it yet, I wrote about my story 16 and pregnant.
