Our Family Holiday in South Wales {Part #2} ST. FAGANS CARDIFF

You may have read my previous post {part one} about our small family holiday in South Wales. Day three was another really unplanned day. We knew we had about a 4 hour drive back home so we wanted to wake up and get out of the hotel by 9am the latest - and we did. We originally planned to either go to techniquest or visit the Millenium Stadium. As we went to the reception of the hotel to get our discount for parking at NCP car park we asked if it would be ok to come and get the discount about 2-3pm but she told us it would be around £7-£12 extra so we decided to ask where would be a good place to take the kids for the day with reasonable priced parking. That is when she said St. Fagans and that is where we decided to go. We had breakfast in Wetherspoon's next door to the hotel before setting off.

St. Fagans was around 20 minutes from the hotel and on our way it started to rain quite heavily and we did think to maybe just go straight home. However, the sun came out and the rain stopped. When we arrived at St. Fagans it was only £5 to park which we didn't mind as the entry was free. We bought a map for 50p which helped us round the place. I had an idea to what was there but I had no idea it was so big.

St. Fagans is National History Museum on huge grounds. We chose a perfect day as the sun was shining, blue skies were out and we were very lucky to miss the rain. The grounds were just stunning and the buildings were very interesting. When we arrived it was really busy, loads of people were walking ahead of us and the same way. The first old house we visited we couldn't have a good look at because there was too many people so we decided to leave the house and go elsewhere. Everybody had spread out later on and it was much easier entering the other houses and exploring better.

If you ever visit St Fagans I would recommend you to have some good footwear as there is a good walk to each area. Many people brought picnics and you could spend all day there as there are so many things to see and do. The old houses were just amazing to look at. One area there was a row of old houses and showing how time in the house changed, it just made you think how lucky we really are now to have everything we have right now.

There were old fashioned shops, old churches and so many old buildings. Outside the buildings were signs explaining where the house was built in Wales and we saw one that was built near us that lived 4 adults and 6 children. The size of the house shocked me and my partner as it was so small. I would say it's the same size as my kitchen. It was so interesting to see.

The girls loved having so much space to run around and it was so nice watching them play nicely. Except for one time on the day, we let the girls have two rides in the small fair that was on. Mia wanted another go but I decided we weren't in St. Fagans to spend lots of money and told her no more. The temper she had then was ridiculous but she calmed down after 10 minutes or so and started playing nicely and enjoying herself again.

Just when we thought we had finished we saw there was another way to go to the other side. Mia wasn't too happy when she realised we were going for another walk but she soon changed her mood when she could run around. This side of the grounds were truly stunning and so beautiful. The grounds, water, castle and trees were just breath-taking. A place I could just sit down and relax. I wish we had more time there and just relaxed a bit more. I was struggling walking up the steps and walking longer because I am pregnant but I still enjoyed myself even though I was in pain!

St Fagans is such a beautiful place to visit and if you like to travel back in time and seeing old houses and how they used to live, I would really recommend this place to visit. It's a great place for families of all ages and even just adults.

  25. St Fagans sounds amazing! Something I'd definitely like to see! By the sounds of it, it reminds me a little of Beamish up north near Newcastle where I visited when I was a lot younger and I love it so I'm sure this is the sort of place I'd love!
