The First Week {The Ordinary Moments}

I wanted to write this over the weekend but I have been way too busy the past week. I've hardly come on here to write anything only to update you all on introducing Freddie and my birth story third time round. I also thought today was the perfect timing of writing how the first week has been as it is my due date today, 25th of July. Never did I think I'd have a 9 day old baby boy with us today.

The first week has been pretty amazing if I say so myself. I have enjoyed it so much. It's a huge difference compared to my other two children. I am breastfeeding Freddie and it's a whole lot different to formula feeding and although it is painful at times, I am really enjoying it and the bond is just amazing between me and Freddie.

The first two days were pretty difficult as I was hardly getting any sleep but since then he has been amazing. I really can't complain about his sleeping time during the night. He will usually go off to sleep around midnight - 1am then wake up for a feed and nappy change around 2-3am and back to sleep around 3.30-4am and then wake up 6am. But last night {24th July} he slept 11pm - 1am, back to sleep 1.30am and didn't wake up for a feed until 5.45am. He's a good sleeper during the night and I feel so lucky that he is because Elliw was a bad sleeper for a good few months when she was a baby.

After I had Freddie I noticed the after pains were quite painful and did feel like the start of labour pains all over again. I had paracetamol to help with the pain but it would only work sometimes. The after pains were bad for the first 3 days. I don't suffer with them as much now only now and then but I do feel so much better and I feel a lot more like myself now too, which I am glad about. I will be writing about my first week postpartum very soon and writing one weekly, along with with my weight loss journey {again}.

The girls have been fantastic. They have their odd and normal arguments with eachother but neither of them have shown any signs of jealousy. All through the pregnancy both girls had been excited to meet their little brother. Elliw, especially, has helped me so much. She tries to help by changing his nappy, getting his things for me, cuddles him, kisses him and so much more. She has taken her new role as a big sister amazingly well and I am so proud of her. Mia is also amazing with him, but I see that she can be a bit more shy with him but I know that will change as the weeks and months go by. They have both made me so proud of them.

When I was pregnant I honestly thought I would have taken many photos of Freddie with my big camera but the camera hasn't really been out. But I have taken 100's of photos on my phone. If you follow me on instagram {lifeasmum_blog} or Facebook {here} then you will see how much photos I have taken.

Breastfeeding is a whole new experience for me as I formula fed Mia and Elliw. I really wanted to breastfeed this time and I was worried all the way through my pregnancy that maybe he wouldn't latch on or that I wouldn't be able to do it but one thing I knew, I didn't want to give up and by breastfeeding from day one, I can not see myself giving up anytime soon either. I was really lucky that he latched on straight away and has been perfect since. I will soon be writing my experience on a new post.

There have been many visitors since day one and although I have appreciated people coming over to see Freddie, I honestly can not wait until the visiting stage is over. I get so tired in the evenings and I just want to relax. I have also found Freddie likes his snuggles and feeds on and off during the evenings so I find it awkward having to feed in front of people when I am still learning myself to breastfeed him. I have fed him in front of a few people because of people visiting and it has been ok but I am not sure if I could do it out in public yet.

My partner is off work for two weeks so it has been really nice having him with us. He has been fantastic with the girls taking them out places and I have been going some places with them too but some days I have stayed home to have some me time with Freddie and get used to the feeding. I have actually forgotten how much of your time a newborn baby takes up. I have noticed every time I make a meal, Freddie wakes up wanting a feed so I am either leaving my food to go cold or eating it awkwardly whilst feeding him which can be a challenge at times.

This week has been amazing. The girls have behaved a lot better than I thought. I have been feeling a lot better than I thought and just knowing Freddie is now with us, makes it even better. I have always wanted a son, I am not quite sure why but for some reason, I did. Nearly 7 years of having girls and now having a boy, is a huge difference. Having everything blue {and grey} is a nice change. I still can not believe my baby boy is here, finally.

The midwife has come to see us twice. The first visit, Freddie had lost weight from 9lbs 2oz down to 8lbs 6oz. I started to worry thinking it was my fault because I may have been breastfeeding wrong but she reassured me and made me worry less and told me it was normal. The second visit, which was 2 days after, he had his heel prick and got weighed again. This time his weight had gone up to 8lbs 15oz which was fantastic. I was so pleased, I have noticed the difference in his feeding since the first few days, he is feeding a lot more and longer now which I am really pleased about. He fills his nappies a lot. The amount of times he has pee'd on me too, it's quite funny!

I really can't imagine my life without my little Freddie George now. He is just an amazing and good little boy. The girls are fantastic with him. We are all just so happy. I honestly can not say that there has been a bad day since he was born, because there hasn't.

  3. Wonderful post. It's only been four months since we had a newborn and already this feels like ancient history. Very weird. So nice that you have this special time with two older ones who are not so under your feet now. Hope the good sleeping continues! #marvmondays

  11. Ahh such a lovely update and I can totally relate, having just had Lily too (she's now 4 weeks). Those afterpains were so painful, paracetamol did nothing for me - thank god they wore off after 3 days. And the visitors thing - yes, it's so tiring, and I feel awkward feeding in front of them too, and it's like they're waiting for you to finish so they can hold the baby! I've ended up spacing visitors to just Sundays now. Freddie George is gorgeous, enjoy your cuddles xx

  20. What a gorgeous little boy! It sounds like you are all doing really well, and how lovely is it that you get to experience breastfeeding the third time round. Well done lovely, it sounds like you are doing an amazing job. His first week sounds really similar to our little one, he lost a similar amount of weight in his first weel, but then put it all back on and some more. Im also really enjoying having a little boy after having a girl. As much as I've loved having a girl, its quite nice to experience having a boy too :-) Lovely update, thanks for sharing it on #MarvMondays. Emily
