Action-packed destinations for your next family holiday

There’s one important yet simple tip for a harmonious family holiday: make sure the kids are occupied. Destinations such as Santorini and the Maldives might be stunning spots for romantic breaks, but most children will quickly get bored lying on the beach all day.
But remember that the holiday is for you as well, so don’t spend the entire time engaged in children's activities. I’ve selected five action-packed holiday destinations that both you and the kids will love. Most options are easy on the pocket – we all know that when travelling with children, costs quickly mount up.

The Gower Peninsula, Wales
Who says you need to leave the UK to have a fun-filled holiday? The Gower Peninsula, in south-west Wales, is a beautiful natural playground flanked by stunning beaches.
There are a few activity centres offering an endless array of activities, on land and on water. Top picks include surfing lessons at Rhossili Bay or trying some bushcraft activities with Dryad Bushcraft. You can also have a go at abseiling and canoeing.
There are plenty of quaint villages in the area serving hearty pub grub. But we recommend treating the kids (and yourself) to an indulgent ice-cream sundae at Verdi’s, in the town of Mumbles.

Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenia is rapidly increasing in popularity as a holiday destination. With its caves, castles, lakes and mountains, it’s an active, outdoorsy country perfect for families. Base yourself in the picturesque capital of Ljubljana and you’ll be within reach of numerous attractions.
The whole family will enjoy exploring Ljublana, a fairy-tale city of local markets, picturesque bridges, and its idyllic river. Take a cable car to the atmospheric Ljublana Castle, or visit the House of Experiments, a wacky interactive science museum.
Head out to explore the countryside around Ljubljana. Kids and grown-ups alike will love the Geoss Adventure Park, with zip lines and obstacle courses through the treetops.

Cyprus
The beautiful island of Cyprus is renowned for its family-friendly resorts and stunning Blue Flag beaches. But there’s so many more things to do in Cyprus with the kids than just lounging on the beach or by the pool.
Take them on a horse-riding adventure across the idyllic countryside. Visit the Aphrodite Water Park in Paphos, where you’ll find everything from whitewater chutes to baby pools.
George’s Fun Bus is another fantastic activity. This guided tour is geared towards children, but adults will also love visiting Ayios Neophytos Monastery, the Sea Caves and other fascinating attractions.

Road trip around Iceland
Iceland is known as the ‘Land of Fire and Ice', as it’s covered in glaciers, as well as boasting more than 130 volcanic mountains. This unique island is a fascinating place for a road trip. You can even save money on accommodation by renting a motorhome.
Follow the main road, Route 1, as it circles around Iceland. Cruise along the south coast, admiring the views of windswept, black sand beaches. Stop off at Jökulsárlón, a lake with hundreds of blue-tinted icebergs floating on its still waters.
Hike across a glacier or bathe in one of the island’s many thermal hot springs. Take a whale-watching trip from Húsavík Harbour and discover the surreal volcanic landscapes of Dimmuborgir in the north – and look out for the Northern Lights, too. The whole family will be captivated by this surreal, beautiful island.

Orlando, Florida
Although you might be wary of taking a long-haul flight with a family, Orlando is definitely worth the trip. Most families visit for the theme parks, including Disneyworld, Universal Studios and MGM.
Visit Disneyworld’s famous Magic Kingdom where you’ll find the enchanted castle and your favourite Disney characters alongside adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters like Space Mountain. Make sure you do your research to find out which theme park is best for your family.
There are plenty of free activities to do, too. Stroll down Disney’s Boardwalk, where you can watch street musicians and performers, and enjoy waterfront views. Visit the picture-postcard town of Celebration, where you can take a horse-and-carriage tour, and kids can play in the interactive fountain.
These are just a few of many action-packed destinations where you can take your family. Whether you're after beach fun, beautiful scenery or theme-park thrills, you're sure to find somewhere special.
