When you’re young, your jewellery is almost
exclusively from those 20p machines or high street sales. They’re all ones that
discolour, break, or dye your skin green when it encounters any type of
moisture!
So, when you get to the point in your life when you
start getting some nice pieces in your jewellery box, you might not know how to
take care of it properly! Here are a few tips to help you get started:
Store
Jewellery Separately
As different gemstones have different properties, they
can scratch or damage each other if they’re stored together.
Keep your treasured jewellery either in a box that has
soft-lined compartments or airtight packaging that protects them from dust. Silica
gel packs will absorb moisture and sulphur in the air and help
jewellery keep its shine for longer. Also, try to keep your jewellery away from
direct sunlight, damp or extreme heat/cold as this can damage them.
Protect
it from Wear and Tear
Put your jewellery on last when you’re getting ready –
hairspray and makeup could contaminate your jewels and diamond earrings can be
damaged by combs, brushes or any of your hair styling tools.
Also, be careful to remove your jewellery if you’re
doing housework or manual tasks at work as it could be damaged by cleaning
products or if it’s knocked. Diamond rings can be easily chipped by a hard blow
so if it’s an engagement ring or a family heirloom, taking care of it is
essential.
Clean
it Gently
To remove oils, dust or contamination, you should
occasionally, and very carefully, clean your jewellery. It’s best to use
non-abrasive materials like soap and water, and a soft brush for this, but it depends
on the type of jewellery it is.
Also, make sure you don’t rub or over-handle your
jewellery as it’ll shorten its lifespan and use cleaners that are formulated specifically
for it, e.g. silver, gold or platinum.
Take
it to the Professionals
If you’re not sure what your beloved jewellery
requires, seek professional advice from experts like F.Hinds.
Try to get your favourite pieces cleaned and inspected professionally once a
year, especially delicate pieces that are best handled by an expert. They’ll be
able to check for any damage and any dirt, marks, blemishes or scratches that
are caused by daily wear can be removed to get your piece back to brand-new.
Follow this simple guide on how to look after your
jewellery properly. With these tips, your jewellery will stay beautiful with
that brand-new look for longer!
