How to Take the Stress out of Moving Home

It is widely recognised that moving home is a highly stressful experience. There is so much to plan and organise; there is always that niggling feeling that you have forgotten something, and let's face it, we don't always want to move out of our homes. Especially if we have been there for a long time. The emotional issue aside, there is no reason why you can't limit the amount of stress you feel when moving. All you need is to follow a few good moving techniques and you will find the whole process far more manageable.

Moving Home Checklist

The first thing that you need to do is sit down and think about everything that needs to be done and create a moving home checklist. Doing this well in advance of your potential move date is the best course of action. A couple to a few months ahead would be best. The more you get out of your head and onto the paper the less daunting the task will seem. Put everything and anything down like booking the removal firm, all the companies you need to contact, anything like carpet cleaning that needs to be arranged. Often the stress comes from leaving everything too late, things before harder and more expensive. So, start with a list and work off that.

The Paperwork

With a checklist in hand, it makes it far less stressful to do the paperwork. That is because you can see what still needs to be done. The sooner you let your utility companies know, the sooner you will be able to close your direct debits down on the correct meter reads, for example. You don't want to be paying a direct debit on the new house and old house simultaneously because you forget to tell the old company you're moving out.

Book the Removals Firm

The sooner you get your quotes and book, the more likely you will be to get the removal firm that resonates with you, as well as the right date. Moving on a weekend may be difficult if you are only booking a week ahead of the moving date, whereas booking three months ahead, you are far more likely to get a Saturday.

Declutter and Pack

Again this needs to be started as early as possible, especially if you haven't decluttered in a while. It is amazing how much clutter a home generates over even a short period of time. So, if you have been living at your current home for years, you need to get going. With the beauty of time, you will be able to get rid of everything that is junk. You can even sell things and make some back. If you have any items that you are emotionally attached to, or just want, but are unsure whether they will fit at the new house, i.e. if you are downsizing, you can also arrange a self storage unit to help you out in the meantime. Leaving it until the last moment gives you no opportunity to do this. Once you have decluttered, you can pack everything that you actually need in the right way.
