It’s no wonder that so many people are a fan of autumn. The bright orange hues make the scenery that much more special and there’s an array of wonderful wildlife to explore.

Autumn is also the season in which conkers are out in full force, so what better time to take to the outdoors and see how many you can find. Not only this, but if you and your family are conker crazy, there’s a wide range of other uses for these seasonal seeds to take advantage of.

Conker Crafts

After you’ve been conker collecting and your house is bursting at the seams with conkers, you’ll no doubt be wondering what to do with all of them.

Luckily there are countless conker crafts that are fun and family-friendly. Here are a few of my favourites.

Conker snakes

This is a simple craft that you can do at home. Drill small holes into the conkers you’ve collected and thread them onto a long piece of string or plastic lacing cord. Add googly eyes and a tongue to your snake’s head and there you have a simple conker snake!

Pencil toppers

Conkers are the perfect shape to make cute pencil toppers with. To do this, you’ll need to carve out a hole big enough for a pencil with scissors.

Then, decorate your conkers as creatively as possible. You could use paper, glitter or paint to make your pencil topper friends come alive. Lastly, draw some eyes on your pencil pal to make a topper to be proud of!

Race with a Conker and Spoon

We’re all aware of the good old fashioned egg and spoon race, however, why not try it with a twist and use a conker instead? Just stick a conker on a spoon and the first to the finish line wins! No cheating of course...

To make things a bit more tricky, you could create a makeshift obstacle course and give out small prizes for the person who makes it to the end first.

Use Them as a Feature

Did you know that conkers can add a nice autumnal touch to your living room or bedroom?
If you’ve got a spare vase lying around, fill it with your spare conkers and leave it on a windowsill or shelf to create a brilliant feature for your living space.

Create a Conker Wreath

For this you might want to use a picture online as a guide, however, once you get going you’ll have a spectacular conker wreath to use in no time.

Check out websites such as Pinterest to find tips for making fantastic conker wreaths with easy to follow instructions.

Not only does this look beautifully festive and autumnal, conkers are also said to contain a chemical that wards off spiders, so it’s a win win!
